Osceola became a county in 1887 and is just south of Orlando and west of Melbourne. Named for the famous chief of the Seminole Indians, Osceola is one of Florida’s counties that’s filled with history. In fact, Osceola became Florida’s 40th county and was a major transportation hub in the late 19th century with riverboats and railroads. Moreover Kissimmee is Osceola’s county seat, and has strong historical roots with cattle, sugar and lumber. Today, Osceola has an estimated population of 370,000 people and serves as the south/central boundary of the Central Florida’s greater metropolitan area.
When it comes to the school district, Osceola County has support from its dedicated staff, committed School Board and caring community. Serving more than 70,000 students, Osceola strives for educational excellence and a bright future for each and every student. The county’s top performing public high schools include Osceola County School for the Arts, Celebration High School, and Professional & Technical High School. Additionally, the top higher education colleges and universities include Valencia College, Florida International College, Johnson University Florida and Osceola Technical College.
Although Osceola County is close in location to major theme parks and attractions, it’s known for embracing the great outdoors. In fact, their attractions include Old Town, ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex, Boggy Creek Airboat and Wild Florida Airboats & Gator Park. Not only does Osceola showcase sports and recreation, the county also thrives on their neighboring lakes. You can find residents enjoying water sports in the array of beautiful lakes. For example, these lakes are Lake Tohopekaliga, Lake Kissimmee and East Lake Tohopekaliga.
